Vimancy

Vimancy is the school of magic concerned with applying a physical force vector to a target. It is also called “telekinesis” by some. Vimancy is one of the most commonly learned schools of magic due to its versatility and usefulness in everyday life. The vast majority of the use of vimancy is in attracting inanimate objects into the user's hand.

Uses

Vimancy is used primarily in summoning spells related to objects in the immediate vicinity. Most spells are structured such that a force is applied to get the object in question directly away from whichever surfaces it is near, and then applying a force vector through the target and against gravity, pointed at the user, until the object reaches a certain speed. Once the object is within a set sphere of the user, the force vector is switched with respect to the user, slowing the object down and enabling it to be caught more easily.

Beginners and intermediate users of vimancy rely on the use of targeting symbols to channel the magic into their target remotely. This is not strictly necessary for the magic to work, but casting vimancy without thorough knowledge of the target will often result in a misfire, the application of the force to an unintended object matching some of the desired parameters (such as a book of the same color, or applying the force to a shelf instead of to an object on the shelf).

Targeting symbols, being merely an aid in targeting and not the medium from which the magic is cast, do not inflict degradation on the object they are written on, and so may be used to recall the same object many times.

Limitations

Vimancy cannot be used to move sentient targets unless the will of the user is much greater than the will of the target, or if the target consents to be moved. Vimancy is difficult to cast without line of sight to the target (though not impossible). Vimancy struggles when attempting to maneuver an object through a moving set of obstacles (such as a crowd of people).

Vimancy does not affect liquids themselves, but can be used to carry liquids indirectly, such as by moving a bucket of water.

Common Mistakes

Beginner Mistakes

Early on, some of the most common mistakes are related to improper placement of the targeting symbol. If the targeting symbol is written wrong relative to the spell itself, the spell may not work, or the force vector on the target may be flipped.

Not compensating for gravity will often result in the object being dragged across the floor, rather than floating to the user's hand.

Intermediate Mistakes

Not setting a speed limit or auto-brake on the spell will often result in the object reaching unintended velocities, making it difficult to catch. This is acceptable when using vimancy to launch projectiles, but a projectile spell should be structured differently from a summoning spell.
